Still in bed. Coffee in one hand, cigarette in the other, morning light coming through the window whether he asked for it or not. He's looking at the day like it owes him an apology.
He's not getting up yet. The coffee isn't even half done. Whatever needs to happen out there can wait exactly as long as this cup takes.
Everyone has mornings that start like this — not sad, not angry, just not ready. The world is already going and you're still sitting on the edge of the bed deciding if you're going to participate today.
The warm amber light from the window does a lot of the heavy lifting here — the rest of the room is all shadow and rumpled sheets. It's 7am or 11am, impossible to tell, and it doesn't really matter.
